The Very Best Thing (1999)
fade in: JAMES, a stout doorman in his forties, opens the front door of an apartment building in BOSTON. JEFFREY, a slight man in his late thirties with a distinctively pompous tone of voice, drunkenly exits toward the street.
james
Good evening, Mr. Collins.
jeffrey
Good evening, James.
james
(smiles)
Off to Donahue’s?
jeffrey
Where else?
ext. donahue’s - later
Jeffrey stumbles into a seedy bar.
int. donahue’s - later
Jeffrey is quietly sitting at a table. A half-empty bottle of Scotch lies in front of him. The bar is almost empty.
KIM, a blonde woman in her late twenties with a thick, lower middle-class New Jersey accent, enters. She is pretty, but is cheaply dressed and is wearing too much makeup. She takes a seat at the table next to Jeffrey.
kim
Is anyone working here?
jeffrey
(slurring his speech)
Horrible place, isn’t it? The service is just horrible!
He lightly slams his glass on the table.
jeffrey
Please, why don’t you join me. There’s plenty here for the both of us.
kim
(coldly)
I don’t think so.
(looks toward the bar)
Hey, is anybody back there?
Jeffrey staggers to the bar to get TWO GLASSES. He then brings the Scotch and the glasses to Kim’s table and sits down.
kim
Excuse me, but I don’t remember inviting you.
jeffrey
Please allow me to introduce myself.
He offers her his hand, but she doesn’t accept it.
jeffrey
My name is Jeffrey Collins. At least, that’s my nom de plume.
kim
Your what?
jeffrey
My pen name.
kim
(surprised)
You’re a writer? . . . Have you written anything I’ve ever read?
jeffrey
You can actually read?
kim
(angrily)
Of course, I can read. What do you think, I’m stupid? . . . I read a lot.
jeffrey
Please pardon my rudeness, miss -- I’m not myself tonight.
kim
So I can see.
jeffrey
In answer to your question, I’ve written many books -- one has even been made into a TV mini-series.
kim
Really?
jeffrey
That’s right. You see, . . . I’m sorry, but I didn’t quite get your name.
kim
Kimberly Thomas. But you can call me Kim.
jeffrey
It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Kim.
He offers her his hand, and she accepts it.
kim
Me, too.
ext. bar - same
LARRY SIMMONS, a large, rough-looking man in his early thirties, walks toward the entrance of the bar and stops. He leans against the wall and lights a cigarette.
He sees a WORM on the sidewalk and resolutely squishes it with his shoe.
int. bar - same
Jeffrey appears melancholy as he stares at his drink. He then looks at Kim.
jeffrey
You see, Kim, I write trash. The kind of trash they wrap in a fancy-looking cover and sell at your local supermarket.
Jeffrey takes a sip.
jeffrey
I’ve written over a dozen novels, which have sold more than twenty million copies worldwide, in forty languages.
kim
Are you serious? I read those books all the time. Tell me, what are some of the books you’ve written?
jeffrey
Well, there was Lust Over Pike’s Peak and Lust Before Sunset, just to name a few. But my biggest success, of course, was Lust Between Strangers.
kim
Oh, my God! I’ve read all three of them. You’re a wonderful writer. I don’t know why I didn’t recognize your name.
Kim takes a sip.
kim
But then again, all you writers have such similar names. Hey, are you any relation to Jackie Collins?
jeffrey
I’m afraid not.
kim
I can’t believe I’m meeting such a famous writer in a hole like this.
(beat)
If you don’t mind me asking, what are you doing here?
jeffrey
Drowning my sorrows.
kim
Sorrows? What kind of sorrows could you possibly have? I mean, you’re rich, famous, and very handsome.
jeffrey
That is, of course, all very true. Especially the part about being handsome. But let me tell you, success isn’t everything.
kim
(incredulously)
Really?
jeffrey
No, it isn’t. You see, my dear, at one time I had much higher aspirations. I wanted to become a real writer.
Jeffrey takes a sip.
jeffrey
I wanted to write more than just cheap, picaresque tales of sex and immorality. I wanted to write real novels.
kim
So why didn’t you?
jeffrey
(smiles)
Why? Let me tell you, it’s not that easy. No matter how talented a writer you are, there are always plenty of others more talented and even less successful.
kim
So how did you do it?
jeffrey
Well, it took years. I had to wait tables with the rest of the world’s would-be Hemmingways, Oliviers, and Bergmans.
(beat)
I was lucky to even get an agent. I must’ve sent him a dozen query letters before he finally accepted me.
Jeffrey takes a sip.
jeffrey
And he only did because a publisher was desperate to complete a piece of trash. “Oh,” he said, “just do it this one time. The doors will then open wide for you.”
(beat)
Well, the novel was a success. And soon, there was a second and a third; and before I knew it, I was a star, complete with seven-figure advances.
kim
So what’s stopping you now?
He laughs.
jeffrey
What’s stopping me now? Who would want to read a serious novel from me? Once a trash writer, always a trash writer.
kim
Still, from where I’m standing -- I mean, sitting -- you don’t seem to have such a bad life.
(smiles)
Why, I bet you have tons of girlfriends.
jeffrey
Hardly.
kim
I don’t believe you for a second. Are you trying to tell me women don’t throw themselves at you once they find out who you are?
jeffrey
Only on truly rare occasions.
kim
So, you really don’t have a girlfriend?
jeffrey
I’d swear to you on scout’s honor -- that is, if I ever had been a scout.
kim
Would you like a girlfriend? I mean, you’re not gay or anything?
jeffrey
No, not gay.
kim
Boy, I certainly wouldn’t mind having a rich writer as a boyfriend. It’d sure be a change from the losers I usually date.
Kim takes a sip.
kiM
Yeah, it’d be great to be treated like a lady -- to have some guy take care of me, and buy me nice things and stuff.
Jeffrey pours himself another glass of Scotch. He’s barely listening to her.
jeffrey
It certainly would be nice.
kim
So what do you say?
jeffrey
What do I say?
kim
Have you been listening to me at all?
jeffrey
Every word, my dear. What was it you wanted to know?
kim
(frustrated)
I wanted to know if you’d like to be my boyfriend. Don’t you find me attractive?
jeffrey
Why, you’re beautiful. The prettiest little thing I’ve seen all evening.
kim
I’ll take that as a compliment.
jeffrey
Please do.
kim
You know, I live just a few blocks from here. If you’d like, we could go back to my place.
jeffrey
Why, that’s the best offer I’ve had all evening.
kim
(indignantly)
I certainly hope so.
They get up together, but he is so drunk that he can barely walk. He has to lean on her shoulder.
ext. bar - same
Kim and Jeffrey exit. Larry takes a quick look around before discarding his cigarette. He then hits Jeffrey across the shoulder, knocking him out.
kim
Is everything clear?
larry
Don’t worry, everything’s going as planned.
(quickly looks around)
But let’s get out of here.
Larry picks Jeffrey up, throws him over his shoulder, and carries him to a nearby CAR. He dumps the body in the back seat, and they quickly leave.
ext. cabin, vermont - day
A small cabin lies nestled within the woods.
int. cabin - same
Jeffrey is asleep in the center of the room, tied to a CHAIR with ROPE. Larry enters from the back room carrying a small CRATE. He has a PISTOL in the small of his back. When he drops the crate on a table, Jeffrey abruptly wakes up.
jeffrey
What the . . .?
larry
(facetiously)
Ah, you’re alive. We were starting to worry about you.
Larry takes out a POLICE RADIO from the crate and turns it on softly.
jeffrey
Who are you?
larry
My name’s Larry.
jeffrey
It’s a pleasure to meet you, Larry. I’d shake your hand, but I . . .
larry
That’s quite all right -- don’t trouble yourself.
jeffrey
So, Larry, I guess you wouldn’t know where I am and why I’m tied to this chair, would you?
larry
You know what? I think I do know.
jeffrey
That’s terrific. Do you think you could tell me?
larry
All in good time, my friend. All in good time.
Kim walks downstairs. At the bottom of the staircase, she briefly looks at herself in the MIRROR. She then walks over to Larry and kisses him.
kim
How’d you sleep last night?
He smiles and slaps her on her behind.
larry
You know the answer to that.
She blushes a little, before walking toward Jeffrey.
kim
Good morning, Mr. Collins.
jeffrey
(smiles)
Good morning.
kim
How are you feeling?
jeffrey
Oh, just dandy.
He looks at her as if he were trying to recall her face.
jeffrey
Do we know each other?
kim
We sure do. We met last night. Don’t you remember picking me up?
jeffrey
Vaguely. Was I any good?
kim
I’m sorry, honey, but nothing happened. At least nothing happened to me.
(beat)
I guess you must be feeling pretty lousy right about now. Could I get you something to drink?
jeffrey
Yes, please. I’m rather partial to cognac in the morning. You wouldn’t happen to have any Hennesey lying around, would you?
larry
Now, now, Mr. Collins -- alcohol is what got you into this mess in the first place.
jeffrey
Believe me, alcohol’s gotten me into worse messes than this. And it’ll almost assuredly get me into even worse messes still. It is, though, an otherwise reliable friend.
(beat)
And please, call me Jeffrey. After all, I think we can put aside the formalities.
larry
Kim, why don’t you get our friend Jeffrey a glass of water. And while you’re at it, get me a beer.
She walks into the kitchen.
jeffrey
Please excuse me if I’m being pushy, but when do you think you might let me in on what’s going on here?
(beat)
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in any rush. In fact, I could sit here all day if I had to. I’m just a little, how would you say, curious.
Kim walks back in. She gives Larry a BEER and Jeffrey a sip of water from a GLASS. Larry takes a sip.
larry
What do you think, Kim? . . . I think Jeffrey has a right to know what’s going on. Why don’t we get our little show underway.
jeffrey
(facetiously)
Yes, yes -- let’s get the show underway!
larry
I must say, Jeffrey, you’re taking all this very well. I figured by now you’d either be angry or in tears. You know, you’re a good guy. I like you.
jeffrey
(condescendingly)
I like you too, Larry. In fact, once this is all over, whatever this is, I’m sure we’ll be great buddies.
(beat)
Picture it: you and me at the local bowling alley, pounding pitchers of Coors in between frames.
larry
(smiles)
Well, you keep picturing that. You keep picturing that and we’ll get along fine.
(beat)
Now, you wanted to know what you’re doing here.
jeffrey
If it’s no trouble.
larry
No trouble at all. You see, you’ve been kidnapped.
jeffrey
Kidnapped? Why, how delightful!
larry
I’m glad you see it that way.
jeffrey
Of course, I’m glad. Here I thought you were just common criminals.
(beat)
But now, I see you’re a cut above the ordinary criminal. Kidnappers. It takes a sophisticated mind to pull that one off.
(beat(
Tell me, what do you plan on doing next?
larry
Collect a ransom, of course.
jeffrey
A ransom -- of course!
(beat)
Excuse me if you find this a stupid question, but from whom are you going to collect this ransom?
larry
That really is a silly question. From your family, of course.
Jeffrey laughs.
jeffrey
My family? My family? What family, pray tell?
larry
What do you mean, “what family”? Your family, you idiot.
jeffrey
Well, I honestly and sincerely hope this doesn’t spoil your master plan, Larry, but I haven’t got a family.
larry
What do you mean, you haven’t got a family? Everyone’s got a family.
jeffrey
Everyone except me.
larry
No father or mother?
jeffrey
Both dead.
larry
Brothers or sisters?
jeffery
Never had any.
larry
Aunts, uncles -- cousins?
jeffrey
If I do, I certainly don’t know about them.
larry
(nervously)
Not even an ex-wife?
jeffrey
Not even an ex-wife. Or even a present one.
larry
(under his breath)
That idiot!
kim
That’s just great, Larry. “Yeah, this will be our big score.” Big score, my ass!
Larry slams his fist on the table.
larry
Shut up! Let me think.
kim
I won’t shut up! We’ve just committed kidnapping. This ain’t no penny-ante shit. We could end up doing some serious time.
larry
I said, shut up! And if you don’t shut up, I’ll shut you up.
(beat)
We ain’t doing no time.
She sits on the couch, visibly upset.
larry
(to himself)
There must be someone we could get money from . . . a friend maybe?
Kim jumps up.
kim
His agent!
larry
What?
kim
His agent. He told me last night that he’s got an agent.
jeffrey
That’s a terrific idea.
larry
Yeah, his agent. He must’ve made a ton of money off Jeffrey. And he’ll stand to make even more in the future. These guys make something like a fifteen-percent commission.
jeffrey
At least fifteen percent. Mine takes twenty percent for foreign sales alone.
Larry takes out a PEN and PAPER from the crate.
larry
Okay, Jeffrey: give me the name of your agent and how I can reach him.
jeffrey
His name is Jon Epstein. His address is 1420 Avenue of the Americas, Suite 1220, New York, New York.
(beat)
Would you like his Web address?
larry
(annoyed)
A telephone number will be sufficient.
jeffrey
(212) 555-4692.
Larry writes the number down.
larry
Great. I’ll go into Montpelier and give this Epstein a call. With any luck, we can get this whole thing over with in a few days.
Larry gives Kim the pistol.
larry
Watch him. I don’t think he’ll give you any trouble, but . . .
jeffrey
Tell me, what trouble could I cause?
Larry smiles. He then attempts to give Kim a kiss, but she turns away.
larry
Oh, don’t be like that. I didn’t mean to yell at you. You know I didn’t.
(beat)
Come on, we’re almost there.
He puts his arms around her shoulders.
larry
Forgive me.
She turns to him, and they kiss.
larry
That’s better. . . . I’ll be back in a couple of hours.
He leaves.
int. cabin - later
Jeffrey is tied to the chair as Kim walks downstairs. She looks into the mirror at the bottom of the staircase.
jeffrey
(sings)
Here she comes, Miss America, . . .
kim
Very funny.
Kim walks up behind Jeffrey and tips his chair slightly back.
kim
You know, you’re being a real wise-ass for a guy in your situation.
jeffrey
And what situation might you be referring to?
kim
Keep joking. We’ll be the ones laughing once this is over. We’ll be filthy rich. . . . And you know where you’ll be, Jeffrey?
jeffrey
Where, pray tell?
kim
Dead. You’ll be dead.
jeffrey
Well, death might be a nice change. Life has become rather dull, if you ask me. Maybe this “death” thing could be a good change of pace.
She drops his chair forward.
kim
I just don’t get you.
jeffrey
What is it exactly you don’t “get”?
kim
How this can be such a joke to you? I know you must be scared. I can tell you’re a coward.
jeffrey
Cowardice and fear are completely unrelated, my dear.
(beat)
But enough about me. Tell me, what will you do with your share of the “booty”?
kim
There won’t be any shares. Me and Larry share everything.
jeffrey
Oh, I see.
kim
What’s that supposed to mean?
jeffrey
Nothing.
kim
Go on -- you meant something.
jeffrey
Well, it’s just that -- assuming you do pull this off -- why would Larry keep you around? I mean, with the money he’ll get he could buy a dozen “broads” like you.
kim
First of all, I ain’t no broad. And secondly, Larry would never do that. He loves me.
(beat)
Of course, you don’t know anything about love, do you, Jeffrey? Because underneath all your jokes is just a bitter, lonely man.
Jeffrey turns away from her.
jeffrey
(melancholy)
It seems you’ve figured me out.
kim
Yeah, I figured you out. I figured you out the second I met you.
jeffrey
Yes, you’re quite a smart girl.
kim
That’s right, I am. . . . You think I’m just some dumb blonde, don’t you?
(beat)
But I ain’t dumb. Just ’cause I never finished school and don’t talk so good, it doesn’t mean I’m dumb. In fact, I’m a lot smarter than you. Do you know why?
jeffrey
Why?
kim
Tell me, who’s the one tied to the chair?
int. telephone booth - same
Larry puts a quarter in the telephone and dials a number off a piece of paper. A RECEPTIONIST answers.
receptionist (vo)
Jon Epstein and Associates. Can I help you?
larry
Jon Epstein, please.
receptionist (vo)
Who may I say is calling?
larry
Just tell him it’s a friend of Jeffrey Collins.
receptionist (vo)
Just a minute.
(beat)
I’m sorry, but Mr. Epstein is very busy right now. Could you leave a message?
larry
No. Tell Mr. Epstein that this call is a matter of life and death -- literally.
receptionist (vo)
Hold on.
INTERCUT TELEPHONE CONVERSATION - LARRY AND EPSTEIN
JON EPSTEIN is a short, fat man, stuffing his face with PASTA.
EPSTEIN
(swallows)
This had better be important. I’m a very busy man.
larry
Is this Jon Epstein, Jeffrey Collins’ Agent?
EPSTEIN
Yes. Who’s this?
larry
It doesn’t matter who I am. It’s the information I have you’ll find interesting.
EPSTEIN
(bored)
I’m waiting.
larry
I’ve kidnapped Jeffrey Collins.
EPSTEIN
Very nice. Why don’t you send me a query letter about it.
Epstein takes a large mouthful of food.
larry
Hey, you asshole -- it’s not the name of a book! I've really kidnapped Jeffrey Collins!
Epstein chokes on his food. He then quickly swallows.
EPSTEIN
Oh, my God.
larry
And if you ever want to see him alive again, you’ll do exactly what I say.
int. cabin - night
Larry enters with a solemn expression on his face. Kim is sitting on the couch watching Jeffrey. She is holding the pistol.
kim
So, how did it go?
larry
He’s willing to pay us the five million dollars.
Kim jumps up and kisses Larry. He takes the pistol from her and puts it in the small of his back.
kim
That’s wonderful!
larry
Unfortunately, there’s a catch.
kim
A catch?
larry
Actually, two catches. You see, he wants an exchange.
kim
The money for Jeffrey.
larry
Not exactly.
kim
What do you mean?
larry
He doesn’t want Jeffrey. He wants Jeffrey’s next book.
Jeffrey laughs.
jeffrey
I knew Jon wouldn’t let me down. A vulture to the very end.
kim
I don’t understand.
larry
It seems Jeffrey hasn’t written anything for a while. “Washed-up” I think was the word Epstein used. He wants Jeffrey’s next book.
jeffrey
But I haven’t got a next book.
larry
He figured as much. He wants you to write one. He also said he’d prefer if it was on-topic -- that is, about a kidnapping.
kim
That’s crazy! How long will it take him to write a book?
larry
Well, Jeffrey, how long will it take you to write a book?
jeffrey
Well, to write a book of the literary quality Mr. Epstein expects, it would take at the very least a few weeks.
(beat)
But, please, you mentioned a second catch.
larry
(shakes his head in thought)
I don’t know if I should tell you.
jeffrey
Oh, come on -- after all we’ve been through together, you’re going to keep secrets from me?
larry
Well, I guess it can’t hurt.
He walks up to Jeffrey.
larry
Epstein said that sales of this book would skyrocket if -- how should I say it -- you were no longer with us.
kim
He wants us to kill him?
jeffrey
That man is simply brilliant! If I were to write a book, perhaps loosely based on my own kidnapping, during which I was actually killed, the book would be a blockbuster.
larry
He said the film rights alone would exceed the ransom.
jeffrey
Of course, you have one problem.
larry
And what might that be, pray tell?
jeffrey
What incentive do I have to write this book? I’ll be killed one way or the other.
Larry points his pistol at Jeffrey’s temple.
Larry
Your incentive will be living a few more weeks.
int. cabin - day
Jeffrey is sitting in front of a table. His hands are free, but his body is tied. On the table is a PORTABLE TYPEWRITER and a stack of PAPER. Kim enters from the kitchen with a GLASS of WATER. She places it on the table.
kim
Here you go, Jeffrey.
jeffrey
Thank you, dear. Vodka, I hope?
kim
Sorry -- water. Larry says no alcohol until you finish the book. And you haven’t even started yet.
jeffrey
But, my dear, you don’t understand. I need alcohol to write. Do you think I actually wrote all that trash sober?
Larry enters from outside.
kim
He says he can’t write without alcohol.
larry
I tell you what, Jeffrey, after each chapter I’ll give you a beer.
jeffrey
You’re really too kind.
larry
I know.
Larry walks up to Jeffrey from behind. He looks through the blank pages.
larry
What’s this bullshit? You haven’t even started.
jeffrey
Writing’s not that easy. But I guess I couldn’t explain it to you. You’ve probably never even read a book, much less written one.
larry
I’ve read plenty of books, asshole. It’s something they rather encouraged at Princeton.
jeffrey
You must be joking! You couldn’t possibly mean Princeton University. . . . The one in New Jersey?
larry
The one and only. I received a special scholarship there. A scholarship aimed to improve poor, underprivileged inner-city youth like me.
jeffrey
Obviously, they weren’t too successful at it.
larry
Well, I never finished. It was all bullshit, taught by arrogant jackasses like you.
(beat)
Now, I want to see some words on these pages.
He slams his fist on the table.
larry
I mean, now!
jeffrey
You simply can’t force the creative process.
larry
Creative process, my ass. I’ve read one of your books. Creative is the very last thing they are.
Jeffrey blankly stares at Larry. Larry grabs him by the collar and punches him in the face. Blood flows from Jeffrey’s chin.
larry
I told you to start writing!
kim
You didn’t have to hit him that hard.
larry
Shut up!
Larry cocks his arm at Jeffrey, and Jeffrey starts typing. Larry smiles as he pats Jeffrey on his shoulder.
larry
See, that was easy. All you needed was some incentive to get that “creative process” started.
int. cabin - day
Larry is sitting on the couch reading part of a manuscript. He is wearing black leather GLOVES. Jeffrey is sitting by the table savoring a BEER. Kim is watching television.
Larry shakes his head and smiles as he reads.
larry
Man, this is shit.
jeffrey
Excuse me? I’ll have you know this happens to be the best work I’ve done in years. You should’ve read my last book.
larry
I don’t think I could.
Larry puts the manuscript in an envelop.
larry
But it’s not me who has to like it. If your friend Epstein likes it, that’s good enough for me.
kim
What are you doing with that?
larry
Epstein wants to see drafts of each chapter, so he can have Jeffrey make any necessary changes.
kim
You’re bringing it to him?
larry
No, you idiot. I’ll mail it to him from Montpelier. Then, in a few days, I’ll call him to get the changes.
kim
Don’t call me an idiot, Larry. You know I don’t like it.
larry
Don’t say stupid things and I won’t call you an idiot.
He walks toward the front door.
larry
I’ll be back in a few hours. And, Jeffrey, I want you to start on the second chapter. I want to see a chapter a day from you.
Larry walks out.
jeffrey
Charming relationship you two have.
kim
Fuck you. You know nothing about it.
Kim looks as if she were about to cry.
jeffrey
I guess not. I’m sorry.
kim
Forget it.
(beat)
How’s your lip doing?
jeffrey
Not too badly. The swelling’s gone down at least.
kim
You’ve really got to be careful about getting Larry angry. He’s got an awful temper.
jeffrey
(smiles)
So I’ve seen.
kim
It’s no joke. He could really get out of control. He could easily kill you in one of his rages.
jeffrey
As opposed to killing me coldly after I finish the book?
kim
So you do care if you live or die.
jeffrey
I don’t know. Maybe.
kim
Well, just remember, you ain’t dead yet. A lot could happen from now until then.
int. larry’s bedroom - night
Larry and Kim are having rough sex. After Larry climaxes, he rolls off her and pours himself a SHOT of WHISKEY.
kim
Was it okay?
larry
Fine. Get some sleep.
kim
Larry, are you really going to kill him after we get the money?
larry
That’s the deal I made with Epstein.
kim
But you said no one would get hurt.
larry
Things change. I couldn’t have expected killing him would be part of the deal, could I?
kim
No, but --
larry
But nothing. After Epstein approves the manuscript, he’ll make the wire transfer. And then, after we kill Jeffrey, we’ll simply leave the manuscript with the body.
(beat)
As Jeffrey’s agent, Epstein’ll be able to represent it even if Jeffrey’s dead.
(smiles)
It’s a perfect plan.
int. cabin - day
Larry enters. Jeffrey is typing while Kim watches television.
larry
Okay, I got Epstein’s changes for the first chapter.
jeffrey
I can’t wait to hear them.
Larry sits on the couch, pulls out a piece of PAPER, and reads aloud.
larry
Firstly, he says there aren’t enough four-letter words. . . . Secondly, the characters aren’t well enough developed. There’s too much mystery to them.
(beat)
And, finally, the hero isn’t rich or handsome enough.
jeffrey
I see. Basically, he wants an R-rated comic book.
larry
Basically.
jeffrey
(mildly exasperated)
Shall I rewrite the first chapter, or do you want me to come back to it later?
larry
Continue on. You’ll do the rewrite afterward.
(beat)
And don’t look so indignant. It’s not like you’re a real writer.
Jeffrey gives him a nasty look.
larry
(smiles)
What -- did I hit a nerve? I should’ve known there was some greater aspiration underneath all the dribble.
Jeffrey ignores him and starts typing.
larry
You know, I knew a whole bunch of guys at Princeton who thought they’d become the next Kerouac. . . . They probably all ended up accountants and lawyers.
Larry walks up behind Jeffrey and puts his hands on Jeffrey’s shoulders.
larry
So, tell me, who was it you wanted to be? Proust? Miller? Burroughs?
Jeffrey ignores him.
larry
Well, dream on, sweetheart. Just don’t forget who’s writing this book -- Jeffrey Collins, a hack who’ll never write anything but garbage.
int. cabin - day
Jeffrey is typing. Kim enters from the kitchen.
kim
Can I get you some lunch, Jeffrey?
jeffrey
That would be terrific. I’m really in the mood today for some Châteaubriand.
kim
How about a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?
jeffrey
That was my second choice. I don’t suppose you have any Rothschild to wash it down with? Any year will do.
kim
The best I can offer is grape juice.
jeffrey
Close enough.
int. cabin - later
Jeffrey and Kim are eating lunch together.
jeffrey
I must say, this is the best peanut butter and jelly sandwich I’ve ever had. My dear, you’re quite simply a culinary genius!
kim
Enough already. Don’t you ever stop with the jokes?
jeffrey
It’s what’s called a defense mechanism.
kim
I call it annoying.
(smiles)
I must admit, though, sometimes it’s hard to keep from smiling. Especially when you’re making fun of Larry.
jeffrey
You don’t say?
kim
But don’t you dare tell him that. He’d . . .
jeffrey
He’d what?
kim
Nothing.
jeffrey
He’d beat you?
kim
I don’t want to talk about it.
jeffrey
It must be difficult being with such a violent man. I mean, you must always have to be on-guard.
kim
I said, I don’t want to talk about it.
jeffrey
Fine. What would you like to talk about?
kim
How’s the book coming?
jeffrey
I should have chapter four done in a few hours.
kim
Can I read the new stuff? I really liked the beginning.
jeffrey
Be my guest.
She starts reading. Larry enters from outside.
larry
More changes from Epstein.
jeffrey
How delightful.
larry
Cut the bullshit, Jeffrey. I’m not in the mood for it today.
He sits on the couch and starts reading through the changes.
larry
At this pace, we’ll be here for a month.
int. cabin - morning
Larry stumbles downstairs. He is wearing a T-shirt and boxers, and is holding an empty WHISKEY BOTTLE. He obviously has a hangover. Jeffrey is lying on the couch tied up.
Larry wakes Jeffrey up, unties his arms, and leads him to the table.
larry
So, are you almost done with chapter six?
jeffrey
Not quite.
larry
Not quite? What the hell does that mean?
jeffrey
It means I haven’t started it yet.
Larry
What?!
Kim walks downstairs.
larry
I told you I wanted a chapter written every day.
jeffrey
I’m sorry -- it’s just not that easy.
larry
You’re sorry? You better believe you’ll be sorry!
Larry breaks the bottle on the table and cocks it toward Jeffrey.
kim
No!
Kim runs to Larry and grabs his arm. He pushes her away.
larry
Get away from me.
kim
Come on, Larry -- calm down. Let me make you some breakfast.
larry
I don’t want any breakfast. I want to bash his fucking head in.
Larry turns toward Jeffrey, but Kim stops him again.
kim
Please -- just leave him alone.
Larry hits her hard in the face, knocking her to the ground.
larry
Get the fuck away from me!
Larry throws the bottle against the wall. He rushes into the back room. Kim lies on the floor crying.
jeffrey
Are you okay?
kim
(nastily)
What do you care?
Jeffrey slowly reaches out his hand and gently touches her shoulder. A few seconds later, she pushes him away and stands up.
kim
Don’t touch me! I don’t need you. I don’t need any of you!
She rushes into the kitchen.
int. cabin - later
Larry enters from the back room. Jeffrey is sitting by the table.
larry
(angrily)
How come you’re not typing?
jeffrey
I’m not typing because I’ve nothing to type. It’s called writer’s block -- perhaps you’ve heard of it.
larry
I’m really getting tired of your mouth. This isn’t fucking Ulysses you’re writing. Start typing!
jeffrey
No!
Larry grabs Jeffrey and starts pounding his fist into him, over and over. Blood freely flows from Jeffrey’s face.
larry
Don’t you ever talk back to me again!
Kim enters from the kitchen carrying a FRYING PAN with TWO EGGS on top of it. She looks scared as she rushes toward them.
kim
Stop! You’ll kill him!
larry
Shut the fuck up!
She throws the eggs on the floor, and with her full force, hits Larry over the head with the frying pan. Larry collapses on the floor unconscious.
kim
Larry!
She collapses on the floor next to him. She runs her hands through his hair and cries.
kim
Larry!
jeffrey
Is he dead?
She turns to Jeffrey and looks at him with hatred in her eyes. She then crawls toward him and unties his legs, before returning to Larry.
kim
Get out of here. Get out of here before I kill you myself.
Jeffrey stands up and slowly walks toward the door, but suddenly stops. He turns back to her.
jeffrey
You can’t stay here. If he’s not dead, you’ll certainly be when he comes to.
kim
I don’t care. Didn’t you hear me -- get out of here!
Jeffrey quickly walks toward her.
jeffrey
Not without you.
He grabs her hand and lifts her up.
kim
What are you doing? Leave me alone!
jeffrey
I’m not leaving you here, so let’s go. I don’t care if I have to drag you out.
He leads her to the front door. She stops.
kim
But Larry . . .
jeffrey
If he’s alive, I’m sure he’ll fend for himself quite nicely. Now, let’s go!
They leave.
int. car - same
Jeffrey and Kim rush inside.
jeffrey
Quick -- where’s the keys?
kim
Inside. I’ll get them.
She starts to leave, but Jeffrey grabs her arm.
jeffrey
If you’re not back in two minutes, I’m coming in after you. . . . I mean it.
int. cabin - same
Kim enters. She can’t help but look at Larry and cry.
kim
Larry. I’m sorry. But you were going to kill him. I didn’t know what to do.
Larry stirs.
kim
Shit!
She rushes to the desk drawer to pull out a set of KEYS, before rushing back toward the door.
larry
(weakly)
Kim.
Kim stops.
larry
You’re fucking dead.
Kim runs out.
int. car - same
Kim rushes inside and throws Jeffrey the keys.
kim
Quick -- go!
jeffrey
Why -- what’s wrong?
kim
He’s coming to. Get the fuck out of here!
Jeffrey turns the key in the ignition and they leave.
ext. THE APPALACHIAN INN - later
Jeffrey parks in front of a decrepit motel.
int. car - same
Jeffrey turns to Kim.
jeffrey
Why don’t you get us a couple of rooms. We could both use the rest.
kim
Are you sure you don’t want to go to a hospital? You’re still bleeding.
jeffrey
I’ll be fine.
She leaves.
int. motel reception - same
Kim enters. She goes to the front desk and rings the BELL. The MANAGER, a fat man wearing only an UNDERSHIRT and BOXER SHORTS, enters from the room behind the desk.
manager
Yeah, what do you want?
kim
Two rooms.
manager
Let me see what I’ve got.
He sifts through the registry.
manager
Unfortunately, our fine establishment is very busy right now. We have only one free room.
He smiles, showing his missing teeth.
manager
The honeymoon suite.
kim
How much?
manager
(winks)
For you, sweetheart, only nineteen fifty, including tax. Cash, up front.
She takes out a TWENTY-DOLLAR BILL and hands it to him.
kim
Keep the change.
manager
Why, thank you. I’ll put it toward my kid’s college education.
He gives her the key, and she walks toward the door.
manager
Hey, honey, if you need any help in there, just give me a buzz. I’ve got nine solid inches.
kim
Oh, I think you’re being modest. You must have a lot more than just nine inches of fat.
She leaves. The manager’s smirk turns into a frown.
int. motel reception - same
The manager watches from the window as Kim leads a battered Jeffrey into the motel room. He then walks to the front desk and picks up the telephone.
int. motel room - night
Kim is washing Jeffrey’s face with a WASHCLOTH as he lies in bed.
jeffrey
You don’t have to do this.
kim
I know. But you saved my life back there -- it’s the least I could do.
jeffrey
I think you’ve got it a little backwards. It was you who saved my life.
kim
Well, if you had left me there, I’d be dead right now. . . . Besides, if it wasn’t for me, none of this would’ve happened.
jeffrey
Well, that’s true.
They smile awkwardly at each other.
jeffrey
So, I guess tomorrow we’ll drive into Boston. You’ll drop me off at my apartment and then you can go wherever you want.
kim
Okay.
jeffrey
And where will you go?
kim
I don’t know. I can’t go home, that’s for sure. That’ll be the first place Larry will look.
(beat)
I’ve always heard Montana is nice.
jeffrey
It is.
kim
You’ve been there?
jeffrey
A couple of times. I do a lot of traveling. It’s about the only thing I do these days, besides drinking.
kim
I really envy you.
jeffrey
Because I drink?
kim
I’m being serious. I’ve never been nowhere. Besides prison.
jeffrey
Do you mind if I ask why? I mean, you’re beautiful; and you’re smart.
She laughs.
kim
I ain’t neither.
jeffrey
That’s not true.
He gently caresses her cheek. She leans toward him. As they kiss, the door is broken through. TWO POLICE OFFICERS rush in and aim their GUNS.
first officer
Police -- freeze! Stand up and put your hands in the air.
Jeffrey and Kim stand up and put their hands up. The second police officer puts his gun in his holster and handcuffs Jeffrey.
first officer
Larry Simmons -- you’re under arrest for violating your parole. Anything you say can and will be used against --
jeffrey
But I’m not --
second officer
Shut up!
The second officer pushes Jeffrey toward the door.
first officer
What about her?
second officer
We better bring her along, too.
int. prison cell - day
Jeffrey is sleeping by himself. A short, heavy-set DEPUTY unlocks the door.
DEPUTY
Come on -- the sheriff wants to see you.
Jeffrey slowly stands up.
int. sheriff’s office - same
The SHERIFF, a large middle-aged man, is sitting behind his desk eating a DOUGHNUT. The deputy and Jeffrey enter. The deputy leads Jeffrey to a chair in front of the sheriff’s desk and forces him to sit down.
sheriff
That’ll be all, Deputy.
The deputy nods and leaves.
sheriff
Well, based upon the fingerprint analysis, it seems you’re not Larry Simmons after all.
jeffrey
That was what I was trying to tell your men last night.
sheriff
Please accept our apologies. It’s just that the license plates matched, and with your face banged up and all, it . . .
jeffrey
That’s quite all right, Sheriff. As long as everything’s straightened out.
sheriff
That’s the problem. Everything’s not straightened out. First of all, who are you? We couldn’t find any identification on you.
jeffrey
My real name is John Kessler.
sheriff
Real name?
jeffrey
I’ve been going by my pen name for years -- Jeffrey Collins.
sheriff
The Jeffrey Collins?
Jeffrey nods. The Sheriff smiles.
sheriff
Why, I know you. Well, at least my wife does. She’s always reading your books.
(beat)
So, what are you doing here? And why were you driving Larry Simmons’ car? And what were you doing with Kim Thomas, his girlfriend?
jeffrey
It’s a long story.
sheriff
I happen to like long stories.
jeffrey
Well, I was abducted by this Larry Simmons. That’s why I have all these bruises.
sheriff
Was Ms. Thomas involved?
jeffrey
She actually saved my life; and she helped me get away.
sheriff
You don’t say? Judging by her record, she doesn’t quite seem to be the humanitarian type.
jeffrey
People change.
The sheriff leans back in his chair.
sheriff
Not as far as I’m concerned.
jeffrey
If there isn’t anything else, Sheriff, . . .
sheriff
Just a minute. Can you tell me where Simmons is now?
jeffrey
Probably a million miles away.
sheriff
You can at least tell me where you saw him last.
jeffrey
It was in the woods somewhere. Damned if I know where.
sheriff
Fine. You’re free to go, Mr. Collins. But I’d like you to stay in town for a few days.
(beat)
A couple of policemen from New Jersey are coming this afternoon to question Ms. Thomas about Simmons, and they might want to speak to you.
Jeffrey stands up and walks to the door. The sheriff picks up a RAP SHEET.
sheriff
You know, according to this, this Simmons character is pretty dangerous. You’re lucky you’re alive.
jeffrey
Yes, I’m very lucky.
ext. town - later
Jeffrey is walking down an empty street. A PICKUP TRUCK pulls up next to him and quickly cuts him off in the sidewalk. Larry steps out and points his pistol at Jeffrey. Larry has bloodshot eyes as well as a very unkempt appearance.
larry
(angrily)
Get in.
int. pickup truck - same
Jeffrey steps inside and Larry starts driving.
larry
(smiles)
Surprised to see me, sweetheart?
Larry turns on the police radio, which is lying on the dashboard.
A MALE and FEMALE POLICE OFFICER are having a conversation on the radio.
male officer (VO)
Still no sign of Simmons?
female officer (VO)
Sorry. We have three units out searching, but there’s a lot of country out there, a lot of places to hide.
male officer (VO)
And Thomas isn’t talking?
female officer (VO)
At least not yet.
male officer (VO)
Well, we know this woman pretty well. We’ll get her to talk.
female officer (VO)
When do you think you’ll get here?
male officer (VO)
In a few hours.
Larry turns off the radio. He looks toward Jeffrey, who is staring at the radio.
larry
(smiles)
No need to look worried, Jeffrey -- I’ve got your entire manuscript in the back seat.
int. interrogation room - night
Kim is sitting behind a desk. TWO NEW JERSEY POLICEMEN are questioning her. They are both tall and muscular. The sheriff is also there.
first POLICEMAN
One more time. Where’s Simmons?
kim
I told you I don’t know.
first POLICEMAN
That’s bullshit.
second POLICEMAN
Kim, aiding and abiding a fugitive is a serious offense. If you don’t help us out, you’ll be looking at some time.
kim
I told you, I don’t know.
sheriff
What I’d like to know is why you two abducted Jeffrey Collins?
first POLICEMAN
The writer?
second POLICEMAN
Well, Kim?
kim
Listen, I don’t know why he did it.
first POLICEMAN
Kidnapping is a federal offense. Maybe we should call the FBI.
sheriff
Collins says that Ms. Thomas saved his life.
second POLICEMAN
Is that so? You know, I’d really like to talk to this Mr. Collins.
sheriff
I thought you might. I’ve already sent my deputy to get him.
The deputy walks in.
sheriff
Where’s Collins?
deputy
He’s not at the motel. The manager says he hasn’t seen him.
EXT. THE LUCKY NINE MOTEL - SAME
Half the lights encircling the large neon motel sign are out.
int. motel - same
Larry is talking on the telephone.
larry
Don’t worry. It was just a minor delay. Chapter six is well on its way.
Larry smiles and looks at Jeffrey, who is sitting in front of a table. The portable typewriter is lying on top of the table. Larry points his pistol at Jeffrey.
larry
Ain’t that right, Jeffrey?
Jeffrey starts typing.
larry
(to the telephone)
I’ll contact you again as soon as it’s ready.
Larry hangs up the telephone and turns on the police radio.
jeffrey
Aren’t you taking a big chance hanging around this town?
larry
I’m just waiting to see what’ll happen with Kim.
(beat)
And then, we’ll find you another cabin where you can finish your great tome.
ext. police station - day
Kim slowly exits the building by herself. She has an unkempt appearance and looks very tired.
As she turns the corner, the pickup truck follows her. Halfway down the street, it pulls up next to her. Larry calmly waves his pistol at her and smiles.
larry
Did you miss me?
Larry directs her into the back with his pistol. She complies without showing any emotion.
int. pickup truck - same
Larry starts driving.
larry
It’s nice to be a family again.
ext. street - same
A NEW JERSEY POLICE CAR quickly turns the corner. It turns on its siren and starts chasing the pickup truck.
int. pickup truck - same
larry
(looks at Kim)
You set me up!
Larry quickly steps on the gas.
ext. street - same
The police car chases the pickup truck onto a two-lane country highway. The police car attempts to pass the truck a number of times, but is cut off.
Finally, the police car is even with the truck. They both try to push each other off the road. Larry takes his pistol and shoots the front tire of the police car and then pushes the car off the road, where it crashes into trees.
int. pickup truck - same
Larry looks back at the crashed police car, and then turns back to Kim.
larry
You’re nothing but bad luck.
He aims his pistol at her. She’s emotionless.
larry
Give my regards to the devil when you get down there. Tell him I’ll be seeing him soon enough.
Jeffrey knocks Larry’s arm toward the roof of the truck as Larry fires. Jeffrey and Larry struggle with the gun.
ext. highway - same
The truck moves into the opposite lane just as an OIL TRUCK appears in the opposite direction, fifty yards away. It loudly honks its horn.
int. pickup truck - same
With one hand, Larry quickly turns the steering wheel toward the right.
ext. highway - same
The pickup truck swirls out of the left lane seconds before the oil truck passes. The pickup truck continues past the right lane, off the highway. It then uncontrollably rolls down a hill into a ravine, where it crashes.
ext. ravine - dusk
There is no sign of life inside the truck.
int. pickup truck - same
Jeffrey comes to. Larry is seemingly trapped under the wheel unconscious. Jeffrey looks back at Kim, who is also unconscious. He gently caresses her cheek.
jeffrey
Kim -- are you all right?
Kim slowly comes to.
kim
Where are we?
jeffrey
I don’t know.
(looks around)
In some kind of ravine.
(to Kim)
Can you walk?
kim
I don’t know. My leg hurts.
jeffrey
We’ve got to get out of here.
ext. barn - day
A couple of birds rest on a crumbling roof.
int. barn - same
Kim is sleeping under a blanket. She wakes up.
kim
Where are we?
Jeffrey sits next to her.
jeffrey
It’s okay -- we’re in an abandoned barn. It was as far as I could carry you last night.
kim
Larry?
jeffrey
He’s dead. . . . I think.
kim
You think?
jeffrey
He was crushed under the wheel of the truck.
kim
But you’re not sure he’s dead.
jeffrey
I didn’t check his pulse, if that’s what you mean.
kim
I’ve got to get out of here.
(beat)
They only let me go so they could catch Larry.
jeffrey
How’s your leg?
She touches her leg.
kim
It’s sore. But I’ll manage. What about yourself?
jeffrey
I’m fine, besides a few bruises.
kim
Aren’t you lucky.
jeffrey
Yes, I’m very lucky.
He walks toward the door.
jeffrey
I’ll be back in an hour or so.
kim
Where are you going?
jeffrey
To arrange for a credit card to be delivered to me in the town up the road.
(beat)
And after that, I’m going to buy us some hiking gear.
kim
Hiking gear?
jeffrey
Yeah. Did you know we’re only a few miles from the Appalachian Trail?
kim
So?
jeffrey
Well, I think that’d be the last place they’d look for you.
kim
And they’d be right.
jeffrey
That trail is our escape route. It leads down the entire east coast.
kim
Our escape route? You don’t have to escape.
jeffrey
I know. But I’m rather enjoying the excitement, I must admit.
He walks toward the door. As he closes the door behind himself, he stops and peaks his head back inside.
jeffrey
Oh, I’m also going to buy you some hair color. Any particular color you’re partial to?
kim
(smiles)
Black will be fine.
He leaves. She continues smiling, curling up into a ball under the blanket.
ext. ravine - same
A TOW TRUCK pulls the pickup truck out of the ravine. On top of the ravine, the two New Jersey policemen and the Sheriff wait. The deputy rushes toward them.
sheriff
Any sign of them?
deputy
Nope. But there’s three sets of footprints around the stream. And two of them look to be going in the same direction.
sheriff
Well, they can’t go very far on foot.
first policeman
Sheriff, I think you should call a state-wide APB on them.
sheriff
If you think it’s necessary.
second policeman
But who’s the third footprint?
sheriff
My guess is Collins.
first policeman
You think he’s with them willingly?
sheriff
That’s a good question.
ext. appalachian trail - day
Jeffrey and Kim walk along a path wearing HIKING GEAR. Kim’s hair is BLACK. She is noticeably walking with a limp.
kim
How long are we going to walk on this trail?
jeffrey
Until we get to Massachusetts. Then, we’ll rent a car to Boston.
kim
You’ve got to be kidding! We must be fifty miles from the border.
jeffrey
Probably closer to a hundred.
kim
I can’t walk that far!
jeffrey
Would you rather have the police escort you?
(beat)
Besides, we don’t have to do it all in one day.
kim
And where are we supposed to sleep?
jeffrey
We should be able to find inns and lodges along the trail.
Two park rangers, VIC and MIKE, approach on HORSEBACK from the distance.
kim
Shit -- police!
jeffrey
They’re not police -- they’re park rangers. Just keep your cool.
The rangers stop and tip their HATS.
vic
How are you folks doing?
jeffrey
Fine. And yourself?
vic
Could be better. We’re looking for a couple of fugitives.
jeffrey
(surprised)
Fugitives?
Vic suspiciously looks at Kim.
vic
Yeah.
(beat)
Excuse me, but you two don’t happen to have any identification on you?
jeffrey
Unfortunately, we don’t. We’re real minimalists when it comes to hiking.
vic
So I see. You wouldn’t mind coming with us to the station, would you?
jeffrey
Is there a problem, Ranger?
vic
No problem at all. It’s just your friend there --
jeffrey
My wife.
vic
Your wife bears sort of a resemblance to one of the people we’re looking for.
Jeffrey giggles. Kim follows his lead.
jeffrey
That’s really funny.
vic
Maybe, but I don’t want to take any chances.
PETE’s voice comes over Mike’s WALKIE-TALKIE.
pete (vo)
Mike, do you copy?
mike
We copy, Pete. What’s up?
pete (vo)
I’ve spotted a couple of hikers who kind of meet the description. What should I do?
vic
Mike, hand me the walkie-talkie.
Mike hands Vic the walkie-talkie.
vic
Pete, this is Vic. What’s your location?
pete (vO)
I’m about a half-mile from Beaver Falls, in the direction of Wilson Pass.
vic
Okay. Keep your distance. I’ll be there in twenty minutes. Over and out.
pete (vO)
Copy. Over and out.
vic
Mike, escort these two back to the station.
jeffrey
Ranger, is this really necessary? It seems you’ve got your fugitives.
vic
Maybe; maybe not.
(to Mike)
Escort these two back to the station. I’ll be there in an hour. I’ll also radio the state police to meet you there.
int. ranger station - later
Mike, Kim, and Jeffrey enter. The station is empty.
mike
Please, have a seat. Can I get you anything? Coffee? Tea?
jeffrey
We’re fine.
Mike sits down behind his desk. Jeffrey and Kim are still standing.
mike
Please -- have a seat.
They sit down. Mike looks through his desk for something.
mike
I know it’s here somewhere.
He sifts through some papers.
mike
Yes -- here it is.
He pulls out Kim’s MUG SHOT.
mike
Well, I must say, the resemblance is amazing.
He shows Kim the picture.
mike
Wouldn’t you say so, Ms. Thomas?
kim
I’ve seen better.
mike
(smiles)
I’m sure you have.
A VOICE comes across the RADIO STATION.
voice
Ranger Station 3 -- do you copy? This is the state police.
Mike gets up and walks to the radio. Kim sees a FRYING PAN lying by the sink. When Mike picks up the receiver, Kim picks up the frying pan and slowly approaches Mike.
mike
Ranger Station 3 -- come in.
She hits Mike over the head, knocking him unconscious. She hangs up the receiver.
jeffrey
Boy, you’re pretty dangerous with a frying pan.
kim
Not as dangerous as when I’m cooking with one.
They walk toward the front door together. She stops.
kim
You’re staying here, Jeffrey.
jeffrey
What do you mean?
kim
You can tell them I forced you at gun point to help me. They’ll believe you.
jeffrey
But what about you?
kim
Somehow I’ll make it.
jeffrey
And what if I want to go with you?
kim
I’m not dragging you into this any further.
A GUN SHOT fires through the window, just missing them. They fall to the floor.
jeffrey
It doesn’t appear as if you have any choice.
larry (os)
Come on out, kids. I’m waiting.
Kim peaks outside.
kim
(whispers)
Larry?
(to Jeffrey)
I thought you said he was dead.
Jeffrey shrugs his shoulders.
jeffrey
Come on -- out the back!
They rush toward the back of the station.
ext. ranger station, back door - same
Kim and Jeffrey exit to find Larry holding his pistol on them. He has the police radio strapped to his body. He is also holding a portable typewriter case.
larry
(smiles)
Going somewhere?
police radio
Ranger Station 3 -- do you copy?
. . . Our ETA is three minutes.
vic (os)
(from a distance)
Hey, you -- put that gun down.
Larry turns and fires at Vic. Vic fires back, just missing Larry. Larry takes cover by the side of the station.
jeffrey
(to Kim)
Quick -- inside!
Jeffrey and Kim rush inside.
int. ranger station - same
Jeffrey and Kim rush toward the front door.
ext. ranger station, front door - same
Jeffrey and Kim rush outside.
vic (os)
Hey -- you two -- stop!
Jeffrey and Kim rush toward the forest. As they reach the forest, two state police cars and the New Jersey police car arrive.
ext. forest - night
Jeffrey is trying to start a fire by rubbing TWO STICKS, but without success.
kim
I can’t believe you don’t know how to start a fire. I thought all guys knew how.
jeffrey
All guys except me.
He throws the sticks away.
jeffrey
It’s useless.
kim
Try this.
She takes out a LIGHTER from her jacket pocket.
jeffrey
Why didn’t you just give me this in the first place?
kim
You never asked.
He takes the lighter and starts a fire.
kim
Not exactly the inn you promised.
jeffrey
Well, we’re not exactly on the trail anymore. And after today, I think our hiking days are over.
kim
So what will we do?
jeffrey
I don’t know. I don’t even know where we are.
ext. forest - later
Kim and Jeffrey are lying by the fire. Jeffrey occasionally throws TWIGS into the fire.
kim
Jeffrey?
jeffrey
Yes?
kim
Do you think Larry’s still after us?
jeffrey
Probably.
ext. forest - day
Jeffrey and Kim walk aimlessly.
kim
You don’t have a clue where we’re going, do you?
jeffrey
Not a clue.
kim
Hey, isn’t that a road over there?
They walk a few yards to a path that leads to a DIRT ROAD.
jeffrey
Some road.
Kim notices TIRE TRACKS.
kim
Well, at least something has been through here.
jeffrey
It looks like motorcycle tracks.
MOTORCYCLE ENGINES roar in the distance.
jeffrey
Something tells me we better get out of here.
They hurry back to the path, but a MOTORCYCLE cuts them off. An additional FIVE MOTORCYCLES encircle them.
ext. forest - same
Larry finds Jeffrey and Kim’s camp site. He is still listening to the police radio and carrying the typewriter case. He looks very tired. He smells the ashes before quickly rushing away.
ext. dirt road - same
The motorcycles stop in a semi-circle around Jeffrey and Kim. All six bikers are large and gruff looking. The LEADER of the gang has a thick beard.
leader
A little lost?
kim
Not really. We’re just out for a little hike.
leader
Is that so? . . . You’re an awfully long way from the trail.
kim
Well, we like adventures.
leader
Then you’ve come to the right place.
The leader gets off his bike and walks toward Kim. He looks her over.
leader
I must say, you’re one mighty fine-looking woman. We ain’t had anything like you in a long time.
jeffrey
Well, as much as we’d hate to leave you guys, we really should be heading back. So . . .
leader
Hey, I believe I was talking to the young lady. You know, with six of us and just one of her, she’ll be plenty busy. So why don’t you just go run along now.
Jeffrey grabs Kim and pulls her behind himself.
leader
A hero, eh? I like heroes.
The leader grabs Jeffrey’s collar. He then cocks his fist back. He pauses, though, looking at Jeffrey as if he knew him.
leader
Your face is awfully familiar. Do I know you?
jeffrey
I guess I just have one of those faces.
leader
No -- I know you from somewhere.
The leader thinks about it for a few moments.
leader
That’s it!
The leader takes a PAPERBACK out of his back pocket and glances at its back cover. He smiles as he looks at Jeffrey. He then shows him the cover of “LUST OVER PIKE’S PEAK.”
leader
You’re Jeffrey Collins, the writer! I’ve read all your books!
jeffrey
You don’t say.
leader
Yeah, my ex old lady got me hooked on them. You’re the best writer I’ve ever read.
jeffrey
Thanks. . . . I think.
leader
What are you doing out here?
jeffrey
Like I said, we’re just taking a hike.
leader
Hey, I hope you’re not too pissed off. We were just having a little fun.
jeffrey
I firmly believe in letting bygones be bygones. So . . .
Kim nervously looks back into the bushes.
leader
Hey, would you mind signing my book?
jeffrey
I suppose not.
kim
(anxiously)
Could you do us a favor in return?
leader
Sure -- just name it.
kim
Could you give us a lift?
leader
Where to?
kim
Massachusetts.
leader
Massachusetts? I thought you said you were only taking a little hike.
kim
Well, to be honest, we weren’t being exactly honest. We --
jeffrey
Kim.
kim
It’s okay. These guys will understand.
leader
Understand what?
kim
We’re having a little trouble with the law.
leader
Jeffrey Collins . . . a fugitive?
kim
Actually, I’m the one who’s a fugitive. He’s just helping me out. So what do you say?
leader
Sure, we can take you to Massachusetts. Jump on. . . . But I want Jeffrey here to sign my entire collection.
ext. dirt road - later
As the motorcycles leave, Larry enters from the bushes. He aims his pistol at them, but pulls it back.
larry
Shit!
ext. Massachusetts border - dusk
The motorcycles stop, and Kim and Jeffrey get off.
kim
Thanks a lot, boys.
leader
Don’t mention it.
(beat)
And Mr. Collins, it was a real honor meeting you. Thanks again for the autographs.
Jeffrey smiles and nods.
int. new jersey policemen’s car - same
The first policeman is driving while the second policeman talks on the radio.
second policeman
Again, thanks for all your help, Sheriff.
sheriff (VO)
I’m just sorry they got away.
second policemen
Don’t worry -- we’ll get them eventually. Especially if they ever come back to Jersey.
(beat)
Also, the Boston Police will be keeping an eye on Mr. Collins’ apartment.
int. inn - night
Jeffrey and Kim are having dinner. Kim is ravaging her food.
kim
I’ve never been so hungry in my whole life.
jeffrey
So I can see.
kim
I can’t believe how good this is.
When she sees people dancing on the dance floor, she puts her knife and fork down. MELISSA ETHERIDGE’s “NOWHERE TO GO” plays in the BACKGROUND.
kim
Jeffrey, let’s dance.
jeffrey
You must be joking.
kim
(smiles)
Why?
jeffrey
Why? Well, for one thing, I can’t dance.
kim
Everyone can dance.
jeffrey
Everyone except me.
She stands up and pulls Jeffrey out of his chair.
jeffrey
What are you doing?
int. dance floor, inn - same
Kim and Jeffrey awkwardly dance with each other.
kim
See, you can dance.
jeffrey
Well, just don’t blame me if I step on your good foot.
She puts her head on his shoulder.
kim
Tell me, are you really doing this just for the excitement?
jeffrey
Why else would I be doing it?
She looks up into his eyes. He blushes. She smiles. As they are about to kiss, the song ends. He pulls his head from her, but his eyes remain focused on her.
int. room, inn - later
Kim and Jeffrey are sitting on the bed making out. Kim begins to unbutton his shirt. He pulls her hand away.
jeffrey
Wait.
kim
Why?
jeffrey
Why? Well, dancing’s not the only thing I don’t do well.
(beat)
And don’t you dare say that everyone knows how to do it.
kim
(smiles)
Okay, I won’t. But you’ve got nothing to worry about. You’ll be fine. Trust me.
She caresses his cheek.
kim
You do trust me?
He nodes, and they kiss.
int. room, inn - later
Kim and Jeffrey are making love under the covers. She slowly rolls off him, before wrapping herself around his body. She lays her head on his chest, and smiles.
kim
See, I told you it would be okay.
jeffrey
I’m sure it wasn’t much of a performance.
kim
You’re the best I’ve ever had.
jeffrey
Please -- you don’t have to lie.
kim
Who’s lying? Really -- you’re the best.
(beat)
You know, all the guys I’ve been with -- they would always ride me like an animal -- like they were trying to break me or something.
(beat)
Not you, though. We really made love. Just like in the movies.
int. car - day
Jeffrey is driving, with Kim in the front passenger seat.
kim
So, I guess when we get to Boston you’ll drop me off at the bus station.
jeffrey
Is that what you want?
kim
I guess. I mean, I can’t stay with you.
He pulls off to the side of the road and stops.
kim
What are you doing?
jeffrey
I don’t want to drop you off at the bus station.
kim
Why?
jeffrey
(looks straight ahead)
Because . . . because I love you.
She touches his face and turns it toward her.
kim
I love you, too. But . . .
jeffrey
But what?
kim
They’ll never stop looking for me. And when they find me, you’ll be in a lot of trouble.
jeffrey
That’s my problem.
kim
No, it’s not. Not anymore.
Jeffrey pensively stares out the front window.
jeffrey
We could . . . we could run.
kim
Where? They’d find us wherever we went. Hell, I’m probably already featured on America’s Most Wanted.
jeffrey
(smiles)
I doubt it.
(beat)
But, we could leave the country.
kim
And go where?
jeffrey
Well, I have a beach house in Nida. That’s in Lithuania.
kim
And where’s that?
jeffrey
Not too far from Russia.
kim
Russia? Won’t it be cold there?
jeffrey
Not at this time of year. And it’s a really beautiful place -- right next door to Thomas Mann’s house.
kim
Is that some friend of yours?
jeffrey
Who?
kim
Thomas Mann.
jeffrey
(smiles)
I’ll explain later.
kim
What about passports?
jeffrey
I know this writer who has a dozen passports. I’m sure he could help us.
kim
You mean, fake passports?
jeffrey
No, real ones. Deposit the right sum of money in the right bank account, and you can get a passport from any number of fine island republics.
(beat)
Hell, for a million dollars, there’s an island in the Indian Ocean that’ll make you a diplomat.
ext. jeffrey’s apartment building - day
A PLAINCLOTHES POLICE OFFICER walks up to James, the doorman, and shows him his badge.
james
What can I do for you, Officer?
police officer
Does Jeffrey Collins live in this building?
james
Yes -- but I haven’t seen him for weeks.
The police officer hands James his card.
police officer
Well, if he does show up, please let me know.
james
Is Mr. Collins in trouble?
police officer
Not at all. We just want to speak with him.
The police officer leaves.
ext. jeffrey’s apartment building - later
Jeffrey and Kim exit the building. Jeffrey is carrying a SUITCASE.
james
Going someplace, Mr. Collins.
jeffrey
Just a little trip.
james
Would you like me to call you a taxi to Logan?
jeffrey
That won’t be necessary, James. We’ve got a car.
As Jeffrey and Kim leave, Kim and James look suspiciously at one another.
int. jeffrey’s car - later
Jeffrey is driving. They are stuck in traffic. He looks toward Kim, who seems to be deep in thought.
jeffrey
Is something wrong?
kim
That doorman -- I know him from somewhere.
jeffrey
James? Oh, he just has one of those faces.
kim
Maybe.
(beat)
But how did he know we were going to Logan Airport? You didn’t tell him that.
jeffrey
(smiles)
You’re just being overly suspicious. All doormen are blessed with great intuition.
ext. jeffrey’s apartment building - later
A car speeds around the corner and stops in front of the building. Larry rushes out.
larry
Any sign of the cops?
james
Yeah. But we’ve got bigger problems. Collins just left. With some woman.
larry
Kim?
james
How would I know? I’ve never met her.
larry
She came to the prison a couple of times. Only then she was a blonde.
james
I thought she looked familiar.
larry
Where’d they go?!
james
Logan. If you take the T you’ll probably beat them there.
Larry starts running down the street.
james
Hey, you better not forget my cut!
int. logan airport - later
Jeffrey and Kim rush inside the terminal. Kim abruptly stops.
kim
Are you sure you want to do this? It’s not too late to back out. I’d understand.
He smiles and grabs her hand.
jeffrey
If you don’t hurry up, I won’t have any choice.
He quickly leads her away.
int. telephone booth - same
Larry dials a number.
INTERCUT TELEPHONE CONVERSATION - LARRY AND EPSTEIN
EPSTEIN
Hello.
larry
Yeah -- it's me.
EPSTEIN
“Me” who?
larry
(angrily)
Who do you think?
EPSTEIN
Well, it’s about time. Why haven’t you contacted me? I’ve been waiting over a week.
larry
Unfortunately, there’s been another little problem.
EPSTEIN
What kind of problem?
larry
Jeffrey’s temporarily escaped again.
EPSTEIN
I knew this was a bad idea. I’m calling the police.
larry
I don’t think so. I’ve been keeping recordings of our conversations. If I go down, so do you.
EPSTEIN
So what do you want from me?
larry
Nothing. I’ll be out of contact for a while. . . . But when I return, you’ll have your book.
EPSTEIN
I don’t like this one bit.
larry
You don’t have to like it.
Larry hangs up the telephone. He watches as Kim and Jeffrey exit onto the departure ramp. He then walks over to an airline counter, where a young FEMALE ATTENDANT smiles at him.
attendant
Can I help you, sir?
larry
Yes. When’s the next flight to Lithuania?
attendant
Not for another week, I’m afraid.
larry
(smiles)
That’s quite all right. One ticket, please.
int. beach house, nida - day
Jeffrey and Kim enter. The place is a mess and is covered with BOOKS.
jeffrey
I guess I should’ve had the place cleaned before I left.
kim
It just needs a woman’s touch. Give me a few days and you won’t recognize it.
She picks up a copy of DICKENS’ “GREAT EXPECTATIONS.”
kim
The first thing we’ll do is get rid of all these old books.
He grabs the book from her.
jeffrey
Do you realize most of these books are first editions? They’re priceless.
He takes the book from her, sits on the couch, and begins reading it.
kim
Well, at least allow me to organize them. Haven’t you ever heard of bookshelves?
(beat)
Are you listening to me?
jeffrey
What? Did you say something?
kim
What’s it you’re reading that’s so interesting?
She sits on the couch next to him and looks at the book.
jeffrey
Great Expectations. It’s one of my favorite books.
kim
Hey, wasn’t that a movie with Uma Thurman?
jeffrey
Not exactly. This, my dear, is the real thing.
kim
I guess it’s one of those books you have to be real smart to understand.
jeffrey
Not at all. Come here -- let me read you a little of it.
They lie on the couch, her head on his shoulder. He turns to the first page and reads aloud.
jeffrey
My father’s name being Pirrip, and my Christian name Phillip, my infant tongue could make of both names nothing longer or more explicit than Pip. So I called myself Pip, and came to be called Pip.
She smiles. He looks at her.
jeffrey
What?
kim
Nothing. Keep reading.
He continues reading.
jeffrey
I give Pirrip as my father’s family name on the authority . . .
ext. beach - day
Kim and Jeffrey are sitting on an enormous sand dune facing the Baltic Sea. It looks as if they were in the middle of a desert.
kim
It’s beautiful here.
He kisses her neck.
kim
I could live here forever.
jeffrey
You might not like it so much in the winter.
kim
Sure I will.
jeffrey
The real question is what we’ll do here.
kim
You know, I really hadn’t thought about it.
jeffrey
Maybe I could try writing again?
kim
That’s a great idea. You could write that novel you talked about when we first met.
jeffrey
Please, I was drunk.
kim
Maybe, but it was the truth. It’s what you want.
jeffrey
Even if it were, so what? No one today wants to read anything but trash.
(beat)
Plastic, see-through characters -- with connect-the-dot plots and storybook endings.
(beat)
No, I’m afraid literature has become a dead art.
(beat)
And assuming I could even write the book -- which is a big assumption -- and could find a small publisher to print it, no one would read it.
kim
I’d read it. I might not understand it, but I’d read it.
She leans over to kiss him on the cheek. They lose their balance and tumble down a steep hill of sand.
int. beach house - day
Jeffrey is sitting in front of a TABLE. On top of the table is a TYPEWRITER and a stack of PAPER. He is staring out into space. Kim enters with a bag of groceries.
There is a maze of BOOKCASES around the room.
kim
How’s it going, honey?
jeffrey
Awful. I just can’t get it started.
(turns to her)
Maybe I was just kidding myself. Maybe Larry and Epstein were right
-- maybe I should just stick with what I do best.
She walks up to him and turns him back toward the typewriter.
kim
Just write. Never mind if it’s any good; and never mind what Larry and Epstein think.
ext. cafe - day
Jeffrey is sitting alone, reading THOMAS MANN’S “JOSEPH AND HIS BROTHERS.” Kim sits down next to him. In the BACKGROUND, a LITHUANIAN sings Karaoke.
jeffrey
So what did you buy?
She shows him a GLASS-ENCLOSED REPLICA of the city of VILNIUS. When she shakes it, it snows inside.
jeffrey
(smiles)
Very cute.
kim
I thought you’d like it.
A LITHUANIAN WAITER comes to their table.
waiter
Prašau.
Jeffrey sticks out two fingers.
jeffrey
Two Fantas, please.
waiter
Prašau.
The waiter leaves.
kim
What’s that you’re reading?
He shows her the book and she reads the front cover.
kim
Thomas Mann. Hey, isn’t that your friend next door? . . . How come I’ve never met him?
Jeffrey smiles. Kim turns toward the singer.
kim
Look -- they’ve got Karaoke! I’ve always wanted to try it.
jeffrey
Oh, please -- you’re not thinking
. . .?
She smiles and stands up.
jeffrey
Kim -- you don’t want the Lithuanians to form a bad impression about Americans, do you?
ext. karaoke stand - same
Kim is nervous as she sings (slightly off-key) “THE BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME.” The crowd applauds when she finishes.
ext. cafe - same
Kim comes back to the table. Jeffrey smiles at her.
kim
I always wanted to sing with the Pips.
She sits down.
kim
So what did you think?
jeffrey
It was beautiful. It was really beautiful.
int. passport control, vilnius airport - day
A gruff CUSTOMS OFFICER suspiciously looks at someone.
CUSTOMS OFFICER
Passport.
Larry appears. He smiles as he hands the man his PASSPORT.
int. beach house - day
Kim walks to the front door and stops. She turns around.
kim
Honey, I’m going to do some shopping. I’ll be back in a hour.
ext. street - day
As Kim walks past an alley, an ARM appears and pulls her in.
ext. alley - same
Larry smiles at Kim.
larry
Did you miss me?
kim
How did you find us?
larry
For you, I’d walk the ends of the earth.
kim
What do you want?
larry
You know what I want. I want the fucking book finished. And I want the fucking author dead.
(beat)
And you’re going to help me.
kim
Never.
He gently pushes her against the wall and puts his hand around her throat.
larry
If you want to live, you will.
. . . As long as I get the book, I’m willing to forget the past.
kim
How generous of you.
larry
Actually, I think I’m being very generous. Now tell me, I was at your little love nest yesterday, and I saw Jeffrey typing. Is he finishing the book?
She shakes her head.
larry
Then, what’s he doing?
kim
He’s writing a different book.
larry
Terrific. One book’s just as good as another.
(beat)
So this is what I want you to do. Just keep him focused on finishing. And when the time comes, . . .
(smiles)
The time will come.
He releases her and she begins walking away.
larry
And, Kim, don’t try to screw me. I’ll be watching you. If you two try to run, I’ll kill you both -- book or no book.
int. beach house, bedroom - day
Kim slowly packs a SUITCASE. After she finishes, she looks at her reflection in the mirror.
jeffrey (os)
Is everything okay, honey?
kim
Yes. I’ll be out in a few minutes.
She starts unpacking.
int. beach house - night
Jeffrey is furiously typing away. Kim is nervously sitting on the couch. The glass Vilnius lies on the table.
jeffrey
Almost done.
kim
Are you sure? Maybe you should do another draft.
jeffrey
(smiles)
I wouldn’t dare.
ext. beach house - same
Larry is standing outside one of the front windows. He smiles. Kim looks out and sees him.
int. beach house - same
Jeffrey finishes typing.
jeffrey
And “THE END.”
He smiles as he takes the piece of paper out of the typewriter and places it on top of a stack of paper. Kim smiles.
kim
So, it’s all done?
jeffrey
It’s all done. At least the writing part. Now comes the tough part. Endless query after query, followed by rejection after rejection.
kim
Still, I think it’s cause for celebration. Let’s go out.
jeffrey
Why not?
Kim jumps up in front of Jeffrey.
kim
No!
A SHOT fires into her chest. She falls over onto the couch. Jeffrey attends to her in shock, but bullets lead him away from the body and toward the bookcases. In the commotion, the glass Vilnius falls on the floor.
Larry enters holding a GUN. He walks to the table and sifts through the manuscript.
larry
Congratulations, Jeffrey -- you finished. I knew you had it in you.
(looks at Kim)
How heroic. I never knew you had it in you.
(beat)
Okay, Jeffrey, why don’t you come out and take your medicine?
He briefly waits before starting to search through the bookcases.
larry
Come out, come out, wherever you are.
(beat)
Come on, Jeffrey, make it easy for yourself. Let’s just get it over with, so Epstein can get his manuscript and I can get my money.
He searches the next set of bookcases.
larry
Okay, make it difficult for me. I’ll make it difficult for you too, sweetheart.
He searches the next set of bookcases.
larry
I guess you’re wondering how I found this place. Well, it was difficult tracing you to Nida; but once here, it was real easy.
(beat)
Especially when I found out Mann had a house here. I knew you wouldn’t be far away.
He searches the next set of bookcases.
larry
You probably bought this house thinking his karma would somehow rub off on you. Am I right?
(beat)
Well, I’ve read your shit -- you’ll never have anything in common with Mann.
He searches the next set of bookcases.
larry
But you know what? I just came up with a great idea. After this is over, maybe I’ll become a writer.
(beat)
I could write a book about the beautiful times we’ve had together.
(beat)
What do you think, Jeffrey? I could even call it “Death in Nida.” Get it?
Larry laughs.
Jeffrey appears and punches Larry into one of the bookcases, knocking a few of them over. Larry quickly gets up. Jeffrey throws another punch at him, but Larry blocks him.
Larry then punches Jeffrey four times, the last blow knocking Jeffrey onto the floor by the table.
Larry straddles Jeffrey’s hips. Jeffrey’s face is bloody. Larry picks him up by the collar.
larry
You see, Jeffrey, when it comes right down to it, you’re nothing but a worm. A cowardly little worm.
(beat)
And guys like me, we eat little worms like you.
Jeffrey sees the glass Vilnius on the floor. He picks it up and smashes it into Larry’s head. Larry falls to the floor unconscious. Jeffrey jumps on top of Larry and repeatedly smashes the glass into Larry’s head.
kim
(weakly)
Jeffrey?
Jeffrey stops. He throws the glass against the wall and rushes toward her.
jeffrey
I’ll call an ambulance.
kim
No.
jeffrey
What do you mean?
kim
I don’t need an ambulance. . . . I want you to read to me.
jeffrey
What?!
kim
Read to me.
Jeffrey
You need help!
kim
No. I need you to read to me. I want you to read to me what you read the other night. . . . Please.
He rushes to one of the bookcases. He then knocks a few rows of books over until he finds “GREAT EXPECTATIONS.” He brings the book back to her and sits on the couch.
jeffrey
What should I read?
kim
You know what.
He nervously flips through the book until he finds the page. He gets down on his knees, holds her hand, and reads aloud.
jeffrey
With a last faint effort, which would have been powerless but for my yielding to it, and assisting it, he raised my hand to his lips. Then he gently let it sink upon his breast again, with his own hands lying on it. The placid look at the white ceiling came back, and passed away, and his head dropped quietly on his breast.
(emotionally)
Mindful, then, of what we had read together, I thought of the two men who went up into the Temple to pray, and I knew there were no better words that I could say beside his bed than “O Lord, be merciful to him . . . a sinner!”
He collapses on her lifeless body.
int. pulitzer prize award ceremony - night - two years later
The MC opens an envelop.
mc
And this year’s Pulitzer Prize for Fiction goes to . . . John Kessler, for “The Very Best Thing.”
Jeffrey enters and accepts the AWARD.
jeffrey
Thank you, very much.
int. ceremony reception - later
Jeffrey is talking with a MAN.
man
It’s just amazing. To have had all the success you’ve had as a mainstream writer, to then make it as a literary writer as well. It’s just amazing.
(beat)
You’re truly a lucky man.
jeffrey
Yes, I’m very lucky. Well, if you’ll excuse me, . . .
Jeffrey begins to walk away. Epstein appears.
epstein
Jeffrey!
Jeffrey turns around.
epstein
Or should I say, John. Congratulations.
They shake hands.
epstein
I always knew you had it in you. I must say, though, I was a little disappointed that you didn’t come to me with this book.
Jeffrey starts to walk away. Epstein grabs him. Jeffrey turns back to him.
epstein
You’re not mad at me because of that kidnapping nonsense?
jeffrey
No, I’m not mad.
epstein
Good, because I want you to know that I was only biding my time. I would’ve never let you die. You know that, don’t you?
Jeffrey smiles.
epstein
Anyway, I was really disappointed you didn’t come to me with this book. I could’ve gotten one of the big houses to publish it. I could’ve gotten you a huge advance. I . . .
Jeffrey turns and begins walking away.
epstein
Just do me a favor -- at least give me a shot at your next book.
jeffrey
(his back to Epstein)
I tell you what -- why don’t you send me a query letter.
Jeffrey walks OFF-SCREEN.
epstein
A query letter?
int. ceremony reception - later
Jeffrey stops in front of a wall and looks up at an ENLARGED COVER of his book. Kim’s portrait is prominent in the cover design. He smiles.
jeffrey (vo)
The evening mists were rising now, and in all the broad expanse of tranquil light they showed to me, I saw no shadow of another parting from her.
